Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something. Frodo: What are we holding on to, Sam? That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.
-E' come nelle grandi storie, padron Frodo, in quelle che contano davvero. Erano piene di oscurità e pericolo, e a volte non volevi nemmeno sapere come andavano a finire, perchè come poteva esserci un finale allegro? Come poteva il mondo tornare come prima dopo che erano successe tante cose brutte? Ma alla fine, era solo una cosa paseggera, quest'ombra. Anche l'oscurità deve finire. Arriverà un nuovo giorno, e quando il sole sorgerà, sarà ancora più luminoso. Quelle erano le storie che ti restavano dentro, che ti insegnavano qualcosa, anche se eri troppo piccolo per capire perchè. Ma credo, padron Frodo, di capire. Ora, so. I protagonisti di quelle storie avevano molte occasioni per tornare indietro, ma non l'hanno fatto. Sono andati avanti, perchè erano aggrappati a qualcosa. - Noi a cosa siamo aggrappati, Sam? - C'è ancora del buono a questo mondo, padron Frodo. Ed è giusto combattere per questo.
